Where can you have an absolutely beautiful natural outdoor experience for free? Head to any Laurel Highlands State Parks and Forests in any season and take advantage of their special rivers, hiking and biking trails, swimming areas, snowmobile and cross country skiing trails, fishing and hunting sites, birding areas and other natural wonders including waterfalls, rock formations and lush vegetation. Plan an overnight stay at one of the parks’ cabins or camp sites.
Check out the spectacular Youghiogheny River in Ohiopyle State Park – the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation’s 2008 “River of the Year.” While in Ohiopyle, explore Ferncliff Peninsula, a 100-acre botanical reserve registered as a National Natural Landmark. Take a hike on the 70-mile Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail which has won national recreation trail distinction and is part of the Potomac Heritage Trail.
